Scientology offer settles cab driver's complaints
A Clearwater cab driver who sued the Church of Scientology Jan. 6 for $10
million has settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of money.
Garry W. Vinyard alleged that the sect caused him "great fear,
humiliation, embarrassment, mental anguish and loss of capacity for the
enjoyment of life" stemming from an incident Jan. 2 at the former Fort
Harrison Hotel, 210 S. Fort Harrison Ave., the sect's international
headquarters.
According to police and court records, the 27-year-old cabbie's vehicle
was surrounded and blocked by several sect members after William B.
Wilson, also a sect member, got into the cab to go to Tampa International
Airport.
The cab driver notified his dispatcher by radio and police were called to
intervene. Wilson and a sect spokesman later dismissed the incident as a
"misunderstanding."
A secretary for Vinyard's attorney, Leonard M. Vincenti, said the lawyer
would have no comment on the settlement.
"It was settled and the terms are confidential and both sides agreed
not to divulge the terms," sect spokesman Richard Haworth said.
Vinyard could not be reached for comment.
