ANIMAL LIBERATION FRONT TO TARGET VIVISECTORS' CONFERENCES

The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) has given notice of an intention to target two major conferences in New Zealand that are to be attended by vivisectors from around the world.

The New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society has received a communique from the ALF stating that the ANZCCART (Australian and New Zealand Council for the Care of Animals in Research and Training) and International Union of Physiological Sciences conferences will be targeted for direct action.

The communique states that "this includes all companies and establishments who supply products and services to those attending the conferences such as hotels, motels, travel agents, rental car companies".

"We suggest to all those involved with these conferences to re-think their involvement and withdraw their services. The economic consequences of being involved with these conferences will not be worth it. Withdraw you support and publicly state so. If you do not publicly identify yourselves as withdrawing your involvement you will still be listed as a potentially suitable direct action target.", advises the communique.

In November 1999, while ANZCCART held its conference in Wellington, the Animal Liberation Front visited the home of Wellington vivisectors, covered their houses with ALF slogans, smashed their windows, and covered a car with paint stripper.

The National Secretary of the New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society, Phil Clayton, says that, "ANZCCART aims for the continuance of vivisection in New Zealand, their membership being comprised of the New Zealand vivisection community.

"ANZCCART mislead the public through their promotion of supposed human benefits from vivisection, but their claims are easily refuted by use of scientific evidence that shows it is dangerous to extrapolate results from animals to humans", he said.

Phil Clayton says "The International Union of Physiological Sciences' Congress will feature speakers such as Michael Stryker from the USA, who is infamous for his experiments, irrelevant to the human situation, involving the sewing up of kittens' eyelids."

While NZAVS has no knowledge of the identities of individuals currently involved in ALF activities, the Society supports their actions.

"Legal channels are continually blocked to anti-vivisectionists. For instance there is no anti-vivisection representation among the interested parties at the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification, despite the vivisectors being represented by many groups. NZAVS applied for interested party status, but was rejected with no reason given. Legal channels are blocked so it is no surprise that some anti-vivisectionists choose a more direct approach through groups such as the Animal Liberation Front.", he said.

The Animal Liberation Front is an international underground movement of people who choose to take direct action against animal abuse industries. These actions include liberating animals from places of abuse, and economic sabotage through property damage or destruction. The ALF adhere to strict guidelines of conduct which state that no injury or death must come to any animal or human in the course of the action.

In breaking with the normal way the Animal Liberation Front operates, we are making the following public statement in the form of this Press Release.

2001 in New Zealand is going to be a busy year for the ALF, and we are well prepared. As well as the normal and frequent operations that the ALF run, we have identified two specific animal abusers conference that will be targeted for direct action by the Animal Liberation Front.

The first is the ANZCCART conference in Hamilton, June 28th to 29th 2001

The second is the IUPS World Congress in Christchurch, August 26th to 31st 2001

This is a warning to all those involved with the ANZCCART and IUPS conferences; YOU WILL BE TARGETED BY THE ANIMAL LIBERATION FRONT. This includes all companies and establishments who supply products and services to those attending the conferences such as hotels, motels, travel agents, rental car companies and any others whom we will and have identified. The ALF has undertaken arduous training and has carried out reconnaissance specifically for these events. We are prepared. The ALF will not only target the above but also has been gathering specific intelligence over the last 8 months and has identified specific PEOPLE and PLACES who will be targeted due to their involvement with ANCCART and IUPS.

We suggest to all those involved with these conferences to re-think their involvement and withdraw their services. The economic consequences of being involved with these conferences will not be worth it. Withdraw you support and publicly state so. If you do not publicly identify yourselves as withdrawing your involvement you will still be listed as a potentially suitable direct action target.
