Welcome to the July 2001 edition of the ELP Newsletter. In the below 'Court Reports & Legal Updates' you will find a report that eco-activist Fran Thompson is requesting the Death Penalty for herself as a way to end her Life sentence. This request is a stark reminder of the very real need there is for prisoner support. Mayday 2000 prisoner, Michael Collins, recently wrote "Prison is a weapon used by the State to crush individuals". As a prisoner support network we must not allow the prisoners to become crushed. Please support the Earth Lib prisoners. Remember, no matter how long they are serving, they all deserve our support.

COURT REPORTS & LEGAL UPDATES

TWENTY THREE YEAR OUTRAGE

On 11/06/01 American eco-activist Jeff Luers (aka Free) was sentenced to 22 years & 8 months imprisonment for an arson on a car dealership and an attempted arson of an oil truck. Before sentencing Free told the Court he carried out his action "because of the irreversible damage being done to the planet, our home." Jeff naturally intends to appeal against this outrageous sentence. ELP will keep you informed as to any appeal outcome.

MARK WARREN SANDS

On 14/06/01 it was reported that Mark Warren Sands has had a 22 count federal indictment placed against him. Mark is alleged to be a member of the "Coalition to Save the Preserve" (CPS) and is accused of setting fire to eight homes in Phoenix and suburban Scottsdale in the USA.

MARTIN & SUSAN GET 12 MONTHS

On 25/05/01 Ploughshares activists Martin Newell and Susan Van Der Hijden were found guilty of disarming a nuclear convoy vehicle and given 12 months jail time. However, because they had already served this whilst on remand, both were released immediately!

DORSET VICTORY

In July 2000 a GM crop in a field at Tolbridge Farm, Sherborne, Dorset, England, was damaged by GM protesters. Coincidentally, at around about the time of the damage taking place there was also an anti-GM demo near the farm. This prompted the police to arrest seven people, who had attended a demo, and charge them with aggravated trespass. However on 12/06/01 the case against was thrown out after a court heard that at the time of the protest no one had entered the field and the damage occurred independently of the demo.

GREENPEACE COURT VICTORY

On 13/06/01 five Greenpeace activists were cleared of Conspiracy to Cause Criminal Damage to an incinerator in Edmonton, London, England, which they had blocked the top of. In court the activists argued that they were legally allowed to block up the incinerator in order to protect the environment and human health.

NIKOS MAZIOTIS APPEAL REPORT

On 09/01/01 the Greek eco-activist Nikos Maziotis, had his 15 year jail sentence reduced on appeal to 5* years! During his defence speech Nikos explained the real criminals were the multinationals and the police.

FRAN THOMPSON ASKS TO DIE

In November, 1998, it was reported in a Nebraskan newspaper that legislation is being proposed to allow Life prisoners to opt for death by lethal injection. ELP have learnt that eco-activist Fran Thompson is looking to seek execution under this legislation if it does become law. ELP is totally apposed to the death penalty but we understand fully the feelings & emotions Fran is going through in making this request. To support Fran whilst she is inside, and hopefully to dissuade her from her death quest, a support campaign has been set up for her. Jeremiah Rush Bowen, #108016, DCC, 1140 E 10th St, Delta, CO 81416, USA Serving 2 years for an arson against a Townhouse.

Marco Camenish, Viale dei Tigli, 14 13900, Biella, Italy. Serving 12 years for a number of eco-bombings in Italy. Also Switzerland wants to extradite Marco so he can serve a 10 year sentence there for eco-bombings. Marco can read French, German, Spanish & Italian.

Lee Himlin EX7748, HMP Perry Road, Sherwood, Nottingham, N65 3AG, England. Jailed for ecotaging quarrying equipment which was threatening a protected National Park and the Nine Ladies stone circle.

Ted Kaczynsky (04475-046), US Pen - admin Max Facility, PO Box 8500, Florence Colorado 81226, USA. Is serving multiple life sentences for the infamous 'Unabomber' bombing & murder campaign, which was carried out against symbols of technology.

Craig Marshall, PO Box 50263, Eugene, OR 97440, USA. Serving 5 years 5 months for "Conspiracy to commit arson" and "possession of an incendiary device".

Nikos Maziotis, c/o Dafni Vaganou, Ozortz 3, 10689 Athenes, Greece. Sentenced to 5* years for bombing the Greek Ministry of Industry in protest at an attempt by TVX-Gold to build a factory in Strymonikos Bay.

Silvano Pellissero, Com. Mastrolierto, Via Ferrerinoli no2, Sanponso, 10080 Torino, Italy. Serving 6 years 8 months for allegedly sabotaging of a rail line construction site in the Northern Italian Alps. Silvana can read Spanish, Italian & French.

Helen Woodson, 03231-045 FMC Carswell, POB 27137 Admin Unit, Fort Worth, TX 76127, USA. Serving 27 years for robbing a bank & then burning the money whilst reading out a statement denouncing greed, capitalism and the destruction of the environment.

ANIMAL LIBERATION

Dave Blenkinsop, EM7899, H.M.Prison, Bedford, MK40 1HG, England. On Remand for alleged GBH against the Managing Director of Huntingdon Life Sciences.

Mel Broughton DJ8216, HMP The Mount, Molyneaux Avenue, Bovingdon, Hemel Hempstead, HP3 0NZ, England. Serving 4 years for conspiracy to cause explosions.

Barry Horne VC2141, HMP Belmarsh, Western Way, Thamesmead, London SE28 0EB, England. Serving 18 years for various anti-vivisection arsons and attempted arsons.

Robert H. Wilson 640289, Estelle Prison, 264 FM 3478, Huntsville, TX 77320-3322, USA. In 1978 Robert (a.k.a. Standing Deer) exposed a government plot to assassinate Leonard Peltier. His reward was life in prison.

Eric Wildcat Hall, #BL-5355, Unit I/A 10745 Route 18, Albion, PA 16475-0002, USA. Serving 35-75 years for helping ship arms to Central American indigenous activists.

MOVE

MOVE is an eco-revolutionary group. There are currently eight MOVE activists in prison each serving 100 years after been framed for the murder of a cop in 1979. 9th defendant, Merle Africa, died in prison in 1998.

Mumia Abu Jamal, (AM8335), SCI Greene, 1040 East R. Furman Highway, Waynesburg, PA 15370-8090, USA. Mumia is a former Black Panther, radical journalist and MOVE supporter who, in 1981, was framed for the murder of a cop. He was sentenced to Death and is awaiting execution.

ANTI-FASCIST & SELF DEFENCE

Satpal Ram, E94164, HMP Blankenhurst, Redditch, Worcs, B97 6QS, England. Serving Life for defending himself against a racist attacker.

Rafal Rusilowski, Areszt Sledczy, Kopernika 21, 15-396 Bialystok, Poland. On remand having been framed for the hospitalisation of a neo-nazi. Tomasz Wiloszewski, Zaklad Karny, Orzechowa 5, 98-200 Sieradz, Poland. Serving 15 years for accidentally killing a neo-nazi whilst defending himself.

Fran Thompson (93341), 1107 Recharge Rd., York NE 68467, USA. An eco-activist who is serving Life for shooting dead, in an act of self-defence, the man who had been stalking her after he broke into her home.

STATEMENT ON VIOLENCE

Some of the prisoners listed in this Newsletter have been accused of violent direct action. ELP Newsletter does not condone the use of violence. However we do not support censorship either and believe our readers can decide for themselves if they wish to support a prisoner or not.

The British Government intends to turn the A303 into a Duel Carriageway through the Blackdown Hills in Somerset, England, an area of outstanding natural beauty. More info on this as it develops.

ECO-PRISONER ACTIVIST NEWS

On 30/05/01, Mayday 2000 prisoner, Michael Collins, in protest at not being given an adequate vegan diet started a hunger strike. Within three hours of his declaration, Michael was given a full vegan pack and promises by the prison not to abuse his human rights again.

EARTH LIBERATION NEWS

The following information has all come from either the eco-prisoners, mainstream media newspaper reports and/or BBC Ceefax reports.

On 26/05/01 anti-GM activists destroyed a crop of GM oilseed rape on a farm at Pienkenstraat, 9620 Velzeke-Rudershove (Zottegem), Belgium.

On 17/06/01, at 03:00 hrs, eco-activists in Holland set fire to a barn containing three earth wrecking machines which were being used to build the Betuweline. The barn and machines were totally destroyed. The Betueline is the controversial new railway line which is linking the industrial arrears of Germany & Holland.

DEDICATION

This Newsletter is dedicated to American eco-activist Jenna 'Sparrow' Griffith (age 20) who on 13/06/01 was critically injured after she fell from a Redwood tree in a forest near Boulder Creek. Sparrow had been tree sitting to stop Redwood Empire Inc from logging that area. Sparrow fell approximately 30 feet before hitting her head on a tree stump on the forest floor.
