Former ELF Spokesperson Receives 54 More Follow-Up Questions From Congress;
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PORTLAND, OR - Craig Rosebraugh, former spokesperson for the underground
Earth
Liberation Front, received 54 more questions from U.S. Congress in response to
his repeated reliance on Fifth Amendment protection during the February 12,
2002 Subcommittee Hearing on Ecoterrorism[sic]. Receiving the additional questions
on March 1, 2002, Rosebraugh was instructed by Rep. Scott McInnis (CO) to
respond no later than March 15, 2002. Rosebraugh turned in his responses to
Congress today, Friday, March 15, 2002 and surprisingly enough, he actually
answered many of the questions.
McInnis, who chairs the Congressional Subcommittee on Forests and Forest
Health, had subpoenaed Rosebraugh to testify at the February 12 hearing in
Washington. During the proceedings, Rosebraugh relied upon his Fifth Amendment
protection over fifty times answering only two questions ñ confirming he was a
U.S. citizen and that he did indeed submit an eleven page written testimony to
Congress (available as a pdf at
http://www.protectcivilliberties.com">).
McInnis responded by sending 54 follow-up questions and threatening that he intended to
seek Congressional contempt charges against Rosebraugh.
Contained within the required take-home test given by Congress to Rosebraugh
are questions ranging from probes into his personal beliefs to direct inquiries
as to his relationship with the ELF. Rosebraugh chose to directly answer at
least 39 out of the 54 questions.
"I decided to answer questions asking for my opinion because I am not ashamed
of my personal political beliefs" Rosebraugh commented. "As I have repeatedly
stated, the United States government is the most extreme terrorist organization
in planetary history. I would not be honest with myself or the public if I did
not acknowledge the desperate need for massive political and social change
within this country."
Rosebraugh did rely on various Constitutional rights for the remaining
questions.
