I have a friend who, while she was recently ordained as a minister,
is involved with what is called "the historical Jesus" movement
amongst some more liberal Christian clergy. They hold with the
results of The Jesus Project, i.e., that Christ, if he did exist, was
not divine, nor the son of God; they revere him as a teacher, a
mortal one. They also feel free to reject certain of his teachings.
She and I have gone around about how those who profess their beliefs
can honestly call themselves "Christians" anymore, since I thought
the basic tenet of Christianity was a belief in Christ's godhood and
that he died for our sins. She maintains that the heart of Christian
belief is his teachings, the "Christian virtues". So she feels
comfortable still identifying as a Christian...tho she was willing to
say that the label "post-Christian" might be a viable one...
Post-Christians...that's an interesting concept...
