Former scout master arrested
A former scout master is in jail in Salisbury for sex crimes with young
boys. Deputies with the Rowan County Sheriff's Department arrested 52
year old William David Smith on Monday. Smith is accused of two counts
of taking indecent liberties and one count of attempted statutory sexual
offense.
Deputies say Smith met the victim at Landis Baptist Church, and lured
him to his home under the pretense of helping him with a homework
project on his computer. Investigators say Smith has a criminal history
that includes pleading guilty to sex crimes charges in 1993. Deputies
say the victim in that case later hanged himself. They also say that
Smith has worked as a Boy Scout leader in two scout troops, and as a
janitor and bus driver for Cabarrus County Schools.
Detectives believe that Smith may have molested other children at
various times during the last thirty years, and they are urging anyone
with additional information to contact the Rowan County Sheriff's
Department at 704-636-1011. David Smith is currently being held in the
Rowan County Jail, his bond has been set at $100,000.
