As I posted before, the point about whether Man is innately good or bad is moot if you are open minded enough to accept seemingly conflicting models of reality.

But as to your question of why so much money is required, I have wondered the same thing, which is why I posted the article "Can I join without giving any money?". The responses indicate that there are ways to be a Scientologist on the cheap. So maybe it's not the case at all that Scientologists "must" pay so much to achieve enlightenment (but from what I can tell, it certainly seems to be the "convention").
