In article <SCHLI.91Jul31163946@rinser.cs.tu-berlin.de> schli@cs.tu-berlin.de (Wolfram Schlickenrieder) writes:

This Mr Hubbard you all know is reported to have said something *like* the following:

,,If you want to make *loads* of money --- go and "make up" your own "religion" (this could have been "sekte" or something equivalent as well...) ''

PLEASE CONFIRM.

russell miller quotes a number of people talking about hubbard suggesting a religion as a way to make money. the quote i heard was supposedly at a sci-fi meeting in l.a., "why write for pennies a word when you can make millions by starting a religion?" miller's only reference to this is a quote from the l.a. times...

ok... my memory isn't so good... i just looked it up...

los angeles times 27 august 1978.. newark... sci-fi group ... "'writing for a penny a word is ridiculous,' he told the meeting. 'if a man really wanted to make a million dollars, the best way to do it would be to start his own religion'"

there were a number of others who recall him saying similar things, but this is the only thing close to a direct quote that i've seen...
