What's all this about us not being able to discuss the OT levels, or keep
copies of SCAMIZDAT on our systems? It's none of Helena Kobrins's
business if we keep a single copy for private study (IMHO IANAL YMMV).
Using extracts from SCAMIZDAT in the context of published criticism of
Scientology is perfectly within our "fair use" rights. It is what Dennis
was doing and he was right to do it.
Here's an example of Fair Use:
An Extract from OT7
First, some background: this is the OT-7 course. To get this far, you have
to pay *LARGE* amounts of money (unless you join staff, in which case
you'll probably still have to pay for books, tapes etc.). It is at this
stage that the OT is expected to develop all kinds of supernatural powers
(you know, the powers that we all had trillions of years ago until we were
given the mass amnesia that fooled us into thinking that we are physical
beings.) Hubbard doesn't require you to demonstrate these powers to anyone:-
you just have to *convince yourself* that you have them ("if it's true for
you..").
The power that is supposed to be developed in this section is
the power to plant one's thoughts into another being, with the purpose of
communicating with them or even controlling them.
Here it is from Hubbard himself:
OT7-48
1. Find some plants, trees, etc., and communicate to them
individually until you know they received your communication.
2. Go to a zoo or a place with many types of life and communicate
with each of them until you know the communication is
received and, if possible, returned.
OT7-49
Go out to a park, train station or other busy area. Practice placing an
intention into individuals until you can successfully and easily place an
intention into or on a being and/or a body
[end of quote]
You know those sad people hanging around on their own in zoos or train
stations? They're scientologists!
[end of commentary]
How can the law tell me whether I can have SCAMIZDAT archives on my disks
(which are my own personal property, not used for commercial purposes, etc.)?
By deleting the files, we are just giving in to the harassment.

Isn't that - talking to trees - what HRH Prince Brian is reputed to do?
You don't suppose that Brenda's son _is_ a $cieno, do you?

I would suggest that you read the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and,
in particular, section 107 (1); you'll find that, even for copyrighted works,
personal importation for one's "private and domestic use" and even non-
commercial, petty distribution, would appear not to be criminal offences.

It seems desirable to have a concordance of the Scientology "scriptures",
so that we can discuss them accurately. To that end I've written a little
program to number the lines. The Unix "cat -n" command will do something
similar.
#include <stdio.h>
int main(int ac, char **av)
{ unsigned int i, begin, end=65535; FILE *in; char buf[1024];
in=fopen(av[1], "r"); if(!in) return(1);
fprintf(stderr, "Beginning line: "); scanf("%u", &begin);
fprintf(stderr, "Ending line: "); scanf("%u", &end);
for (i=1; i<=end; i++) {
fgets(buf, 1024, in);
if (feof(in)) return(0);
if (i>=begin) printf("%05u %s", i, buf);
} return(0);
}
A reminder, excessive quoting would be a violation of "fair use" provisions
of the pertinent copyright acts. But I think quoting 25 lines is fair use,
don't you?
