Here's a fairly detailed example of a phenomena which exists in FidoNet due to difficulties getting System Operators to comply with FidoNet Policy.

When there is an abusive user in Internet, complaints sent to the user's Internet Service Provider are usually taken care of quickly since the ISP is a commercial consideration.

In FidoNet, however, SysOps who run FidoNet nodes do so as a hobby. Getting them to comply with Policy is, for many of them, a difficult task; one that requires appealing to higher levels of FidoNet authority. Due to degredation in FidoNet over the years, it's very rare to even get a response from FidoNet coordinators, leave alone corrective action to force a SysOp to comply with the rules.

Here we have an abusive user who started up a SysOp in Australia. The user's name is John Warner and he's a New Age kind of ideological fanatic or something. His behavior is (as you'll see in his messages below) certainly abusive and disruptive, targeting FidoNet's SKEPTIC echo and its Moderator out of ideological hatred and spite.

When Thom and Tom created FidoNet, they had ideals of their own. The network was to be a fun hobby for everyone. Disruptive users who go out of their way to disorganize a dicussion forum were tagged "annoying" and were ejected from the network so that the rest of the participants could get on with their hobby.

That vision has degraded over the years, likely due to the inexpensive access to the Internet. Long-time SysOps still hold the higher ideals of Thom and Tom's vision yet, sadly, many SysOps carve out their own empires and run what they consider to be their networks, being absolute despotic rulers of everyone under them.

Anyway, take a glance at something that happens more and more in FidoNet as the network degrades further. John Warner is typical of the growing trend that is destroying what others -- people like myself, in fact -- worked hard on 15 years ago to create.

I just want to let you know that what is to follow is being sent to you only because you've seen some of John Warner's other actions, and because you've been somewhat active in one of my echos in the last year.

I will gladly accept any advice you may have to offer on the situation, and suggest that if you have been the recipient of abusive NetMail from Mr. Warner that you take the liberty to file some complaints yourself.

This post, more than anything else, is intended to inform as many people as possible as to what is going on, just in case it goes to future legalities.

Thanx for being patient, and I hope you get some clarity out of John Warner's words . . . even the ones he fakes and then says that I posted. Thanx again.

Now I wanted to inform you of all that has happened before I take any sort of action, in case you are the least bit interested or have any influence on the situation.

I don't know how he's still able to read the echos you say you have him cut off from, etc., and will just leave that up to you to look into, should you feel so inclined.

I am just formally going on the record about the whole situation, in case this is preparation for a complaint further up the line.
