Four of us picketed the San Francisco org today, including one newcomer
who had seen the picket announced in the Bay Guardian and come down
specifically to join in. (Actually, he said it was the Bay Guardian, but I
didn't think we got listed in the Guardian this week - I only saw us
listed in the SF Weekly. Maybe it was in the online edition. I'll have to
check.)
It was actually a pretty darn uneventful picket.
Almost immediately after I arrived, a bright young gentleman came over and
started talking with me. He seemed pretty well informed about Scientology.
Alas, I didn't realize he was actually a new picketer, come to join in the
protest (he didn't mention it right away). We chatted all through the
picket, and he gave his name/nickname as "Roop". About a half-hour into
the picket, I unhooked my spare sandwich sign, so he had a sign to wear
during the picket, and he did an excellent job of handing out fliers.
Brent showed up next, and Administrati came along right after that, so we
suddenly had four protestors covering the sidewalk. Brent took occasional
turns around the block, and when a parking space opened up near the org,
he parked his van nearby, with his "UFO CULT WITH PRISON CAMPS" sign on
the back. (I saw Mr. Lady I Work Here come out to the corner, stare
intently at the sign, and zip back inside.)
There was no sign of Jeff Quiros today; instead, Mr. Lady I Work Here did
camera duty. Something apparently went wrong with his camera at first,
because he stopped and told us "I'll be back". As usual, we all posed
cheerily for the camera, including Roop.
As usual, many passing pedestrians and drivers shared our opinion of
Scientology's unethical behavior, and lots of people honked and waved in
support. One gentleman who took a flier said Scientology had killed a
friend of his. We also had a lovely couple come strolling by who had both
been involved in Scientology - the lady said she had been in really deep:
they hadn't gotten much money from her, but she had been in the Sea Org.
They got out of Scn, she said, when they met and fell in love - she said
love has a way of getting people out of Scn.
I saw a few more of the regulars - I complimented Josh on his new haircut
and I saw Burly Guy come outside for a smoke. The pretty Sea Org lady
stood outside for a bit, and I snapped a few pictures. I asked if she'd
like to pose for one for the web page (pointing out that I wanted it for a
web page of pretty Scientologists), but she declined.
My walk home, like my walk to the org, was an opportunity to wave at the
passing cars and hand out fliers.
When I got home, there were a handful of bigot fliers awaiting me,
evidence that my revenge picketers had paid me a call. I hope they're
pleased with all the dissem I did for Scientology today (since I really DO
want people to think for themselves, most of my fliers have
www.scientology.org on them, along with www.xenu.net and
www.scientology-lies.com - so I gave away over 100 fliers referring people
to Scientology's site today).
I am immensely grateful to Roop, Brent, and Administrati for joining in
today's picket - it was LOVELY to see Brent and Admin again, and
delightful to meet our newcomer.
And don't forget, the next regularly scheduled
first-Saturday-of-every-month picket is June 5 at the regular time, 12 - 2
- see you then!

Can you say "Xenu?" ... I knew that you could.
