Notice: Fredric Rice may have removed segments of the replies given to questions if they contained copyrighted materials. After a very short while, Scientology "experts" refused to answer questions and started cut-and-pasting copyrighted cult propaganda. Additionally I removed URLs in some of the replies, and left them in others. And it's also important to note that eventually the unfortunate "Greg Churilov" cultist was ejected from askme.com for his typical Scientological behavior.

Subject: Why is Sea Org a para-military organization?

Truthseeker21 asked this question on 4/30/2000:

I was looking at pictures on the Internet of Sea Organization members, and I've seen them at a Scientology Church in my home town as well. Members are all dressed in military uniforms, with ranks and so forth. Why is a "religious order" dressed in this manner? What other religion on Earth has a para-military religious order?

Greg Churilov gave this response on 5/1/2000:

The Sea Org is not a para-whatever.

[And that's an insane, profound lie. In fact this arm of the cult dresses itself up in a toy sailor outfit and, along with the rest of the insane cult, applies pseudo-military rhetoric. Hubbard created the Sea Org to be his killing machine once he managed to take over a country -- which he fully attempted to do in a number of places -- flr]

There are no weapons, no weapons training, no warfare tactics, no tanks, not even self-defense training. It is an entirely pacifist oriented organization.

The Sea Org is a tightly disciplined religious order. Religious Orders traditionally wear uniforms, both as an identification badge and to simplify their lives.

Mr. Hubbard could've chosen a uniform to resemble 15th Century monks, but obviously that would've been out of date and silly. Orange robes likewise would be dumb.

The perfect choice, to instill pride, discipline and a team spirit, was to choose a XX century look, a uniform loosely based on the look of the US Navy (L.Ron Hubbard himself had been a US Navy Officer during WWII).

Best,
Spirit
