Notice: Fredric Rice may have removed segments of the replies given to
questions if they contained copyrighted materials. After a very short
while, Scientology "experts" refused to answer questions and
started cut-and-pasting copyrighted cult propaganda. Additionally I
removed URLs in some of the replies, and left them in others. And it's
also important to note that eventually the unfortunate "Greg
Churilov" cultist was ejected from
askme.com for his typical Scientological behavior.
Subject: L. Ron Hubbard's married life
FredricRice asked this question on 5/4/2000:
How many did was L. Ron Hubbard married? Do you know?
honorarykid gave this response on 5/4/2000:
Hubbard was married three times.
His first wife was Margaret Grubb, who he married in 1933. He had two
children by this marriage, L. Ron Hubbard Jr. and Catherine.
Polly alleged beatings and psychological abuse by LRH during their
marriage.
LRH Jr. (nicknamed "Nibs") was in Scientology from 1951 to 1959, but
quit and took a new name, Ron DeWolfe, after he became disgusted by,
and estranged from his father's growing megalomania and violent
outbursts. None of DeWolfe's children ever grew up in Scientology. You
can see a very interesting video of his testimony before the Clearwater
City Counsel hearings on Scientology in 1982, at
http://www.xenutv.com/hearings/dewolf.htm
Also, an 1980s Penthouse interview of DeWolfe has recently been posted
to a.r.s. Check Deja.com.
Hubbard's first marriage ended, not by divorce, but when Hubbard took a
second wife, Sarah Northrup. Sarah was Jack Parson's girlfriend, the
younger sister of Parson's ex-wife, when Hubbard met her. LRH and
Sarah ran off with $10,000 of Parson's money, which Parson's had given
Hubbard to use to buy a boat, which was to be a co-investment. This
marriage was the final curtain on Hubbard's attempts with Parsons to
incarnate the Whore of Babylon into the world via Satanic Black Magic
Sex Rituals. The marriage to Sarah brought another child, Alexis. It was
a short-lived marriage.
Sarah filed for divorce from Hubbard in 1951, and like Polly, alleged that
Hubbard had physically beat her, and psychologically terrorized her.
Hubbard, meanwhile, scurried around trying to avoid process servers. He
still owed Polly alimony checks, and didn't want to have a second
alimony payment.
Hubbard finally traded custody of their child Alexis to Sarah in exchange
for her dropping her divorce filing, and letting him file for divorce against
her. He also made her agree to not say anything bad about him. He
would later deny that Alexis was his child.
Hubbard married Mary Sue Whipp in 1952. She was two months pregnant
at the time. They ultimately had four children together, Diana, Quentin,
Aurther and Suzette. They remained married until Hubbard died in 1986.
Mary Sue rose in the CoS to the position of head of the Guardian's
Office, arguably the most powerful official position within the CoS. But of
course, Hubbard always was calling the shots, even though he carefully,
and purposefully avoided having an official title.
Mary Sue went to prison and served (I think) two years of a four year
sentence after being convicted of stealing documents from government
offices for the Guardian's Office, in the early 80's. This prison hiatus
removed her from the Scientology power structure long enough for David
Miscavige to consolidate his newly foundpower within the CoS, and
relegating Mary Sue permanently to the CoS sidelines.
Hubbard was in hiding, completely secluded from most other
Scientologists from 1980 to 1986. Some think he wasn't in seclusion at
all, but that he actually died in 1980. The matter was actually litigated,
when Nibs brought suit to claim LRH's estate. The court in that case was
satisfied the LRH was still alive, and R. Vaughn Young was a high level
Dept. 20 staffer who also testified to the fact that Hubbard was alive
until 1986.
As for children of this marriage, only two of the four are still alive and
there whereabouts known. Arthur apparently vanished without a trace in
the 1970s, and Quentin killed himself at age 22, in Las Vegas in 1976.
Diana and Suzette are still in Scientology.
honorarykid gave this follow-up answer on 5/5/2000:
Sorry, I reread my answer and noticed that I had neglected to mention
that Margaret Grubb's nickname was Polly. Margaret and Polly are the
same person.
