Notice: Fredric Rice may have removed segments of the replies given to questions if they contained copyrighted materials. After a very short while, Scientology "experts" refused to answer questions and started cut-and-pasting copyrighted cult propaganda. Additionally I removed URLs in some of the replies, and left them in others. And it's also important to note that eventually the unfortunate "Greg Churilov" cultist was ejected from askme.com for his typical Scientological behavior.

Subject: Jobs??

Anonymous asked this question on 5/23/2000:

I was just wondering - Do scientologists have "real" jobs? Or is all of their time devoted to scientology and working at the churches?

I think the answers provided by Larrybergen, FreeZone and formerscientologist are all good answers.

Scientologists are as a group, very dedicated people, there is no doubt about that. They work very hard. Too bad they work so hard toward such dismal ends.

In fact, the subject of employment has been a sticking point with the CoS for many years.

Most, if not all orgs and missions used to post "Help Wanted" signs outside their facilities in order to lure people into the building. Then, when people came in expecting to apply for jobs, they were given essentially the same recruiting pitch to become a Scientologists as a regular, non-job-seeker would get. Typically, no discussion of the "voluntary" status that legally governs most staff members pay and benefits would take place.

The CoS would just wait until it "dawned" on the new "hire" that the CoS was not looking for an employee at all, but for a new Scientologist.

This deceptive form of proselytizing reached it's low point in Germany, when orgs posted these non-employment "jobs" through state supported employment service bureaus. The German government said, no. They made the Scientology "jobs" have a special indicator in their computers, so that real job-hunters would know that the Scientology "jobs" were simply volunteer positions, mainly intended as a proselytizing activity. The Scientologists have used this eminently reasonable response by the German government as evidence that Scientologists are being persecuted in Germany.

I believe that with the advent of global networking of Scientology's critics, the widespread and uniform practice of recruiting new Scientologists through bogus "Help Wanted" signs and ads has slowed somewhat.

But rest assured, if you see a "Help Wanted" sign outside a Dianetics Mission or Scientology org, they are not really looking for an employee.
