Question answered by formerscientologist in Scientology
FredricRice asked this question on 7/25/2000:
I got to watch Ursula C. arive in Clearwater, Florida, to give a
presentation on the Scientology cult. (The video can be
viewed at http://www.xenutv.com/trust/arrival.ram or
http://www.xenutv.com/trust/dslarrival.ram by the way, and
.rm versions of those are available for download.)
The behavior of the cult followers is _extremely_ insane and
I'm curious what experts on Scientology has to say about
whether these people were insane going in or whether it
happend to them while they were inside.
And if I may, I'd like to web your answers.
Thanks!
formerscientologist gave this response on 7/25/2000:
Most people entering Scientology are not insane. Most of
them enter as free thinkers.
I didn't see more than a few seconds of the video. I guess
my computer doesn't work that good. But I can imagine
what you mean by insane.
Any group tends to have a problem with groupthink;
however, Scientology has the worst problem with
groupthink because criticism is silenced, the nomenclature
tends to isolate, and so much devotion is required of the
Scientologists that they tend to lose touch with the
outside world. What can look insane to us is really
acceptable behavior to them.
The groupthink is what makes them zealots.
Is that what you mean by insane?

I think you may be right: Mob mentality takes over and the
thinking stops.
Thanks.
