FredricRice asked this question on 7/25/2000:
I got to watch Ursula C. arive in Clearwater, Florida, to give a
presentation on the Scientology cult. (The video can be
viewed at http://www.xenutv.com/trust/arrival.ram or
http://www.xenutv.com/trust/dslarrival.ram by the way, and
.rm versions of those are available for download.)
The behavior of the cult followers is _extremely_ insane and
I'm curious what experts on Scientology has to say about
whether these people were insane going in or whether it
happend to them while they were inside.
And if I may, I'd like to web your answers.
Thanks!

Scientology is based on the writings of a sci-fi hack writer.
He was a heavy drug abuser, and the FBI noted that he
seemed mental. It is quite likely the man was a paranoid
sociopath to begin with, and the speed and cocaine he
took exacerbated his condition.
Scientology is designed to impose a Hubbardian mindset
onto its followers. The introduction into Scientology
through Dianetics is designed to work on a person's
insecurities by convincing them they have problems that
only the cult can fix.
It makes fairly normal people into something really strange.
I imagine that an individual with mental instability would be
driven right over the edge after this type of mental
processing, sort of like giving cocaine to a lunatic.
As they state on their website, Scientology makes the able
more 'abble.'
