Question answered by FreeZone in Scientology
skyview1 asked this question on 9/27/2000:
Are we taking about the beliefs of Scientology or the actions of
their church? There has often been a vast difference between
the religious beliefs of a faith and the actions of it's church.
What are the basic beliefs?
FreeZone gave this response on 9/27/2000:
I think either the philosophical beliefs or the organizational
conduct is a valid subject for discussion here. You just have
to be aware that they are different subjects and know
which one you're talking about.
A full explanation of the belief system is far beyond the
scope of an answer in this forum, but the basics are:
Scientology belongs to the school usually called idealism,
which means that it believes mind is more fundamental than
material reality, which is seen as a reflection or product of
the spirit. Each of us is an immortal spirit of potentially
unlimited ability and knowledge. We have, over a vast period
of time dating back to well before this universe existed, lost
and forgotten these abilities. The road to reclaiming our true
selves lies in rehabilitating our powers, gaining greater
understanding of the nature of the trap we have fallen into,
and taking full responsiblity for the decisions that have
placed us here.
