Organized crime in Slovakia reportedly controlled by international mafia

Bratislava, 29 May: Organized crime in Slovakia is controlled by powerful
international mafia groups, especially from Russia, Albania and Italy,
according to the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS) annual report for 2001.
Presenting the report to parliament on Wednesday [29 May], SIS
Director-General Vladimir Mitro said crime groups focused on drug
trafficking, but also on public procurement tenders, privatization tenders
and other state orders.
The SIS also monitored activities of the sects Church of Scientology and
Moonies in Slovakia. Scientologists have official centres in Martin and
Bratislava, and secret civic associations, language schools and private
companies. Moonies are more involved in organizing events for young
people.
Slovakia's main security threat is illegal immigration. However, the
influx of Afghan refugees following the American attacks on Afghanistan
last year was not dramatic. Roma emigration is closely related to usury
among Roma as well as efforts of certain groups to profit from
advantageous conditions in EU countries, Mitro said. Some usurers are said
to use psychological and physical threats to force Roma to leave, he
added.
Slovakia is a transport corridor for weapons smuggling due to inadequate
legislation in this area. According to Mitro, Russian and Ukrainian mafia
are using their links to Slovak underworld to smuggle small arms to
countries that have military conflict.
