December 29, 1980, Monday, AM cycle DATELINE: PASADENA, Calif.
A fire which investigators said may have been deliberately set destroyed the
Church of Scientology building early Monday and damaged three other structures
near the Pasadena Playhouse.
The playhouse itself escaped damage.
The fire broke out about 2:30 a.m. and before nine companies of firefighters
could bring it under control, a florist shop, a travel agency and a store were
damaged.
The Church of Scientology building collapsed and debris from two upper
floors narrowly missed three firefighters.
Batallion chief Harry Crusberg said there was evidence the fire was
deliberately set. He said flames started in the offices of the Dianetics and
Scientology building where an outer door appeared to have been forced.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Structural damage was estimated at $225,000 and Crusberg said contents of
the buildings were valued at $100,000.
