Church fraud charges
Paris: Seven officials of the Church of Scientology went on trial on
fraud charges in Marseilles amid allegations that the organisation had
infiltrated the French judiciary, civil service and Government
(Charles Bremner writes).
If the two men and five women are convicted of cheating 10 church
members out of up to £14,000 each, the outcome will strengthen a
Government drive to crack down on the Los Angeles-based organisation.
Suspicions about the church intensified with the disclosure that
thousands of pages of trial evidence had disappeared from court files.
