Submitted for your approval: A freethought holiday.
The Year is 1996 the date April 2nd.

A Country, one of its tenants: that its people be free to exercise their
religion as they see fit. That the government not impose a religious belief.

200+ years after its founding. Most citizens practiced religion, all of them
similar but different. But there in lies the catch. Because it isn't just
that all of the religions practiced shared a common factor. And even if the
God believed in by the religious were true, identifing what he really wants
is not a task for man.

And the day after the government proclaimed all turn away from their
everyday lives, and submit prayers to their gods, the gods turn against them.

Because the old adage is true: "Hands that help are far better than Lips
that Pray."

And Prayers unheard are hard to tell from Prayers denied. Because this isn't
the Twilight Zone, and prayers won't move that mountain ahead. And sometimes
hands and minds are better set to flying airplanes than thinking about gods.

Given the ironic twist of fate, that Ron Brown and 32 others died in a plane
crash the day after National Day of Prayer, I proclaim April 3rd as "Nothing
Fails Like Prayer Day."
