OPERATION RESCUE ASSETS SEIZED IN DALLAS

by Conrad Goeringer

Police late last week seized furniture and office equipment from the
new Dallas headquarters of Operation Rescue, the nation's leading
militant anti-abortion group. The move was to satisfy a $1,000,000
punitive judgment against the organization which had been awarded to
Planned Parenthood stemming from anti-choice protests during the 1992
Republican National Convention. A jury decided that Operation Rescue was
among the groups conspiring to hinder business at Planned Parenthood and
nine other clinics.

Operation Rescue often blocks access to abortion clinics, and engages
in so-called "sidewalk counseling," which consists of distributing
pamphlets and photos of fetuses, praying, or trying to confront women
entering the clinic for abortions. Cries such as "Please Don't Kill Your
Baby!" or "Save Me, Mommy!" are frequently heard during such
demonstrations.

Operation Rescue has appealed the judgment. Planned Parenthood can
enforce the damages award unless the anti-abortion group posts a
$1,000,000 bond.
