Protons do in fact decay.  "The Cosmic Code" page 308:

    "An expected decay model is for the proton (p) to
    decay into a neutral pion and a positron according to:

             __o     +
        p -> ||  +  e

    Because the new superheavy gluons are to incredably
    heavy, the probability of such a decay is extremely
    small -- small but not zero..."

Heinz R. Pagels says that the life duration is 10^28 years.  At the time of the
writing of that book, it wasn't experimentally confirmed to any degree of
certainty that protons decay yet Fermilab, on their way to the Top/Truth quark,
extracted evidence which would confirm the decay.
