MAN STONED TO DEATH

This stoning scene was no excerpt from "The Life of Brian" (the
Monty Python comedy) -- it was deadly serious.

A court in Peshawar, Pakistan, was hearing a case on Sunday,
April 9, in which two men, Rashid and Riaz, were accused of
trying to convert another man to the Ahmedia sect of Islam, which
is banned in Pakistan. Suddenly, a crowd appeared and began
stoning the men, resulting in Rashid's death. Riaz was seriously
injured.

The Ahmedia sect were declared "beyond the pale of Islam" by a
1974 amendment to Pakistan's constitution. In 1984, a decree
banned Ahmadis from using Islamic forms of worship or calling
their places of worship "mosques." There may be 4 million
Ahmadis in Pakistan.
