Urine can cure mad cow disease, Indian doctor says

NEW DELHI, April 13 (Reuter) - An Indian doctor said on Saturday that
British cattle suffering from mad cow disease could be saved if they drank
their own urine.

Dr G.K. Thakkar, chairman of the Bombay-based Water of Life Foundation, said
millions of people around the world had cured themselves of diseases with
the centuries-old therapy of drinking urine.

``I am deadly confident that all those cows can be positively cured of the
deadly disease by making them drink their own urine,'' Thakkar said in a
statement.

Britain has been swept by fears about mad cow disease since the government
said last month there could be a link between Bovine Spongiform
Encephalopathy and its fatal human equivalent Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease.

The announcement prompted the European Union to impose a worldwide ban on
British beef and beef product exports.

In February Thakkar organised a conference on urine therapy which drew some
600 scientists, researchers and therapists to southern India.

Many speakers at the conference claimed urine can be used to treat incurable
diseases including cancer and even alleviate the symptoms of AIDS. Many
mainstream doctors scoff at the claims.

Thakkar said any sick person or animal produces antibodies for fighting the
disease. Excess amounts of the antibodies which are passed away in urine can
be ``recycled'' to increase the person's immunity, he said.

Thakkar said his suggestion could save the lives of thousands of cows facing
certain death.

``Their urine may be collected in a pot and they (can) be made to drink it
by pouring the same in their mouth through a narrow mouthed jar,'' he said,
suggesting the therapy should be tried out on a few hundred cows which would
be given nothing but water and urine for a week.

``There is nothing to lose and everything to gain,'' he said.

Earlier this month a Hindu group in India offered to shelter British cows
threatened with slaughter because of the disease.

The radical Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council) said it had told
representatives in London to build a shelter for ``homeless cows'' and cows
with the disease.
